PhillipsdePury

As a part of Phillips de Pury’s Saturday@Phillips auction of contemporary & urban art, photographs, design and toy art, I was asked to select my favorite pieces from my personal collection of artwork and share the influence these works have had on my life and my career building TRACE and TRUE. I focused on artists like Marilyn Minter, Albert Watson, Zaha Hadid, and Cindy Sherman, who have created extremely influential and provocative works that have shaped my aesthetic sensibilities. Garry Winogrand’s photos from the Women are Beautiful series, are all my all-time favorite. The article was published in Phillips de Pury’s catalogue to accompany the auction on Saturday, April 25th, as well as the viewing, held on April 21-25th. Check out the catalogue here.  -Claude

CONSTRUCTING BLACK FRANCE: A TRANSATLANTIC DIALOGUE

Monday, April 20th, 2009

On April 17th, I spoke at a symposium entitled “Constructing Black France: A Transatlantic Dialogue.” The event, which was organized by the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University and the Africana Studies program at Barnard College, was part of a one-day conference where scholars, activists, and artists from France and the United States were gathered to assess, compare, and contrast the theoretical framing of “Black France” by examining contemporary scholarship on conceptions of race, blackness, minority status, and citizenship. The proceedings concluded with a musical reception at 7:30 PM at Buell Hall (Maison Française, Columbia University), featuring music by Stateside Revolution and Le Tana de Sumanguru, followed by a screening of The Glass Ceiling (Le Plafond de Verre, 2006), an examination of the integration of immigrants in the workplace, with a question and answer session with the film’s director, Yamina Benguigui.  - Claude

pioneers

On April 1st, I flew to Amsterdam to take part in the Pioneers conference, which brings together today’s cutting edge thinkers and entrepreneurs from diverse professional fields for a transatlantic dialogue into the frontiers of civic engagement and social entrepreneurship in Amsterdam and New York City. I met many intelligent and ambitious people from all fields – politics, media, education, technology, activism – and felt truly inspired. I am looking forward to the New York City session, which will be held on November 19-20th, 2009.  Check it out here.  -Claude
